On the shores of TinWis Beach, Tofino Paddle Surf invites people to connect with the ocean, the community, and the incredible landscape that makes this land so special. Founded by Catherine (Cath) Bruhwiler, a lifelong local and trailblazer in the coast’s surf scene, the business carries forward her deep respect for the ocean and the community that thrives alongside it.

Cath Bruhwiler’s journey began in the 1980s, growing up on Chesterman Beach with her brothers Raph and Sepp. Together, they became known as this area’s first family of surfing, pioneering the sport on the coast. Cath’s passion for the ocean led her to become a multiple-time SUP Surf Champion, and her lifelong dedication to the sport and the environment has made her a respected figure in our surf community.

Established in 2009, Tofino Paddle Surf offers surf and stand-up paddleboard (SUP) lessons, rentals, and guided tours on Tla-o-qui-aht territory. Cath’s intimate knowledge of local waterways, combined with her team’s expertise, ensures safe and enriching experiences for all who travel to our coast to experience the waves and spirit of this place.

Tofino Paddle Surf actively supports local youth through the Bruhwiler Kids Surf Classic and collaborates with organizations like the Surfrider Foundation to promote ocean conservation throughout the region. As a Tribal Park Ally, both Cath and Tofino Paddle Surf’s respect for Indigenous lands and cultures aligns seamlessly with the mission of Tribal Park Allies. Her advocacy for environmental stewardship and community well-being, especially among the youngest generations, reflects a shared commitment to preserving the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Tla-o-qui-aht territory.

Tofino Paddle Surf’s commitment as a Tribal Park Ally reflects a belief that thriving businesses and cultural stewardship go hand in hand. By standing alongside Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations as Tribal Park Allies, Cath and her team help ensure that the lands and waters we all depend on are cared for and respected. For other local businesses, becoming a Tribal Park Ally is an opportunity to join a growing movement that values cultural respect, environmental responsibility, and a sustainable future for all.
