World’s Best Way to Wrap a Surfboard Leash

Returning Your Surfboard: A Step-by-Step Guide for a Clean Return

Renting a surfboard means you’re sharing equipment with fellow surfers. That’s why it’s essential to return your board in top condition—and that includes wrapping your leash properly. Follow these steps to ensure you leave the board ready for the next surfer.

1. Post-Surf Check: Inspect and Rinse

Before dealing with the leash, take a moment to inspect your surfboard:

•    Rinse Off Sand if possible: On your way out of the water, rinse the board and the leash at the water’s edge and be mindful of where you put it down afterwards. Or even better, carrying it straight to your vehicle and don’t put it down at all! If you have access to fresh water, a fresh water rinse is ideal. No matter what, do not let the leash drag behind you!

•    Look for Damage: Check for scratches, dents, or dings. If you spot any issues, notify the rental shop immediately. Notable damages or those that expose the foam of the surfboard under the hard epoxy layer.

2. Prepare the Leash

A properly wrapped leash not only looks neat but also prevents damage to the velcro on the leash strap:

•    Straighten It Out: Lay the leash flat on the board’s deck. If it’s twisted or knotted, untangle it.

•    Gather the Excess: Hold the end of the leash near its attachment point on the board to set up for a smooth wrap.

3. Wrapping Your Leash Properly

Follow these steps to secure your leash for return:

•    Start at the Base: Begin wrapping from the attachment point (near the tail of the board).

•    Keep It Even: Wrap the leash along the board’s deck evenly. Avoid too much overlapping to prevent tangles.

•    Secure the End: Once wrapped, secure the leash with the velcro ankle strap. If the velcro is full of sand it will not secure properly.

This method not only presents a tidy look but also extends the life of your leash by avoiding unnecessary wear.

4. Returning the Surfboard

When you’re ready to return your board, follow these final tips:

•    Place It Carefully: Bring it to the designated surfboard return rack and position it upright. Make sure the board is leaning towards the rack and won’t fall when you walk away.

•    Inform the Staff: Let the staff know where you’ve put the board, mention any issues you observed during your session and have them come and check the board with you before you walk away.

Properly wrapping the leash is a small gesture that makes a big difference. Taking the time to care for your rental ensures that everyone using the board enjoys quality gear.
